Tight Rental Market Creates Need for Dedicated Student Housing


 PORT ANGELES, Washington (June 23, 2017) Peninsula College is working with a third party to meet the housing needs of students from out of the area, in an increasingly tight rental market.

Plans are underway for two privately owned structures to be built within walking distance of the college which are “earmarked” for students, PC President Dr. Luke Robins said, including athletes, international students, and those who travel long distances to attend PC.

The prefabricated units, built by Stratford Homes of Rathdrum, Idaho, have been designed in residence hall style, and will have a maximum occupancy of 89 students. Local contractors and engineers and will be used on the project, and Collegiate Housing International (CHI) of Spokane will manage construction and operation of the units.

Peninsula College Foundation was the lead investor in the project with $100 thousand, and a pool of mostly local investors have pledged an additional $650 thousand, providing CHI with sufficient funds to seek local financing with Sound Community Bank and purchase the property.  The total project cost is estimated at $3 million.

CHI is aiming for a November 2017 opening on one of the two structures, though the process is and timeline are still dependent on several  factors, said Peninsula College Vice President for Student Services, Jack Huls.

A stronger economy and people moving to the Olympic Peninsula has tightened the rental market locally, PC Associate Dean for Athletics, Rick Ross said. This has created a challenge finding housing for student athletes. Earlier this month Ross sent out an email to members of the campus community and the Pirate Athletic Association looking for temporary housing beginning August 1, 2017 for incoming soccer players while the units are constructed.
