With albums titled "Jailbait", "Texas Hold 'Em", and "Chasin' Tail" your likely to hear some earthy, down and dirty Blues! Australian vocalist, bass player and songwriter Anni Piper's latest CD 'Split Second' received rave reviews, debuting at #3 on the USA RMR Blues charts. Anni is poised to win America with her 2017 tour. Beyond her provocative titles, she can do it all. Upstage presents Anni at Studio Bob in Port Angeles on Sunday August 13th, 7:00pm.
Early 2004 Piper made the decision to record Jailbait, her debut CD that featured all original compositions. Black Market Music, a record label well known to Australian blues aficionados, immediately signed her. The album was an instant success, winning Piper Best New Talent at the 2005 Australian Blues Music Awards.
"Piper has the kind of voice that lulls men to their doom. Its soft and sweet when it wants to be, scared and vulnerable a moment later, then ripping through you like a razor Piper commands songs utterly."
Jeremy Loome, The Edmondton Sun
"She has the kind of voice and delivery that goes straight to your heart. The music is passionate in-your-face blues and blues rock, played well and best heard LOUD... Anni Piper will, as my friend says, melt your face right off."
Sunday Night Blues Project, USA
Anni's career achievements include nomination as a top five finalist in the 2010 MusicOz Awards in the Blues / Roots categoryiper was also a finalist for 'Best Female Vocal' at the 2008 Australian Blues Music Awards and received a nomination for the 'Rudy Brandsma' award at the 2007 Australian National Songwriting Contest.
Piper began playing bass guitar at age 14. By 19 years of age, she had completed a Bachelor of Contemporary Music degree at Southern Cross University. Piper remembers with clarity the first time she heard the blues back in her school days. "It was Paul Butterfield Blues Band playing Born in Chicago - I knew straight away this was the direction I was heading."
Pipers second album, Texas Hold Em, recorded in early 2007, earned her a nomination for the Rudy Brandsma award at the 2007 Australian National Songwriting Contest for her song Untrue. She was a finalist for Best Female Vocal at the 2008 Australian Blues Music Awards, and finalist in the APRA Professional Development Awards in 2009.
'Twos Company (a compilation of tracks from Jailbait and 'Texas Hold Em) was released in January 2009. Pipers American debut for Blues Leaf Records. The album reached #1 on the Australian Roots music charts, and #21 on the Living Blues charts, though Piper had yet to tour the USA.
Chasin Tail is Piper's 2010 release, placing her as that top five finalist in the 2010 Musicoz Awards. With her voice somewhat akin to Janiva Magness, this is solid blues.
Jim Hynes, Elmore magazine, USA
"Australia has produced several noteworthy blues and roots acts in recent years, including some remarkable female vocalists. Anni Pipers two previous releases... established her as a card-carrying member of that club... Twos Company offers 12 tracks driven by Pipers distinctive, smoky alto, but it also highlights her considerable talent on bass..."
