Port Angeles experienced a couple of historic “Firsts” the same night—opening night for The Lefties, and LIVE television originating right here in Port Angeles from Civic Field.
On June 1st The Lefties hosted the Victoria Harbor Cats in the home-opener for the newest addition to the West Coast League, a semi-professional wooden bat baseball league including a dozen teams from the Great Northwest including British Columbia in Canada.
The stands were packed full at Civic Field. Estimates of attendance went from 2,000 to 2,500. Judging from the brisk sales of ball park food including hot dogs, pulled pork bar b que, and smoked turkey legs it is plain to see the crowd brought their appetites too. Vendors were spotted bringing in 16 kegs of various beverages for a thirsty crowd.
Credit is due the City of Port Angeles Parks and Rec Department led by Corey Delicat.
In the past few weeks Civic Field received a complete makeover including new lighting, new dugout, new bull pen, and new paint. Soon, a new sound system will be installed to complete the rejuvenation of Civic Field. Peninsula Area Public Access Television, Channel 21 on Wave Cable carried the broadcast to 22,000 homes in Clallam County while thousands watched via internet.
The Emmy-nominated broadcast crew from the North Olympic Peninsula Skills Center covered the inaugural broadcast of semi-pro baseball here in sunny Port Angeles.
This was the first time this particular line-up played together yet by the time the game ended they were playing like a well-oiled machine. Opening night jitters may have played a part in the opening night loss to the Harbor Cats. The Lefties did get in the win column on their second outing against Kelona. The Lefties defeated Kelowna in their second of a three game stand at Kelona in British Columbia. The Lefties return to Civic Field Monday for a six game home stand.
